A Thought about Formality

I was the Vice President and then President of my FIRST Robotics Competition Team (449), and kickoff was today. I attended, and my friend (and former President) said to me:

“It’s weird, everything that used to be formal is informal, and everything that used to be informal is formal.”

This prompted some thinking.

It seems to me that a large amount of formality comes from someone executing a plan that someone else came up with. They are not running the thought processes that generated the plan, so they need to do something based on instructions. Instructions assume background which isn’t there (leading to a slight feeling of emptiness), or they strip out personality, and assume formality.
